Capitola, CA

Bruce is a committee member for RAMS. We managed to get approval for both of us to attend the conference this January in San Jose California. Part of what enabled me to go was that I didn't need to get airline tickets as we drove down. We were about 35 minutes from Santa Cruz so we got in a few surf sessions while we were there. The locals said the surf conditions were pretty poor. It was the best surf us poor Oregonians ever saw. I had the longest ride I ever made. And a few short ones as my fin got tangled in sea kelp and I got ejected as the board just stopped moving. I see why they need kelp fins.

Capitola Beach. We surfed here the first day. This was a cool little town with a really mellow friendly vibe. We really liked it here. Unfortunately, the waves tended to be smaller so a few days we had to head north to catch waves.

Despite The Hook having a rep as being a bit of a locals spot, all the locals were pretty cool and we didn't have any problems. It was kelpy and rocky but it was so awesome to have a consistent break point. All you had to do was sit in line and wait for one to come along.

Steamer Lane Pleasure Point. Where the real surfers surf. This is a close as we got.

A few signs with familiar names along the way
